The weather and geography of Madeira have been the key factor in the successful development of the Madeira wine industry over the centuries on this island.
Madeira enjoys mild winters and long, gentle summers which contribute to a long harvest time that stretches from mid August well into October. Geographically speaking, grapes are good to cultivate all around the island, but depending on the height some grow better than others. Touring in Madeira you will find vineyards (as well as banana plantations!) spread all over the island. Around the hotel in Paul do Mar, there are vineyards belonging to many different owners who harvest the grapes to make their own wine. The fertile soil and benign climate allow for a few harvests a year! A privileged land, without doubt. The result of this homemade wine production is called “Vinho Seco”. Try it out of any bar in Paul do Mar. This traditional wine is made from the varieties known as Jaquet and Isabella; it’s is a dark, strong and dry wine. |
